Hi all,

I'm thinking of upgrading my shocks to a pair of Rock Shox Recon Silver TK Forks, but i wanted to know if i upgraded to these would I need to purchase anything else in order to fit them, ie QR axles, mounts etc?

My ride is a specialized hardrock disk, identical to this:

You may find it easier to get your LBS to cut the steerer and fit the forks, you'll also have to get the crown off the old forks to put on the new ones. There's loads of videos on YouTube so have a look at how it's done before fitting them.

I can't see if your current forks have a post mount or not, might want to check that out too.

You wouldnt need to buy anything else.
Easy enough to fit, and cut to size, but it may be worth being shown the first time?

The current forks are post mount. As VW said, it's a fairly easy job. Where are you? There might be someone nearby on here who could give you a hand.

Thanks chaps for the responses. I've not got the forks yet as I wanted to find out how easy they'd be to fit first. I'm in Basildon, not too far from the station. If anyone can offer a hand it'll be much appreciated. I'll provide tea/coffee and biscuits

I was shown how to do it the first time and have since swapped back over now twice myself when I had to repair a hydrlock in the Recons.

Easy really... IF the new forks have the Star Nut already in them?

As Eccles also mentioned, My Darts were IS-Mount and my Recons are Post-Mount so I had to get an adapter but you look like you don't need this

Cheers for that. I'd like to have a go at fitting them as i love taking things apart! I'm just looking at some guides on how to fit them - looks like I may need to get some new tools......

No special tools required..

Can get crown-race off old forks carefully with flat screwdriver and refit to new forks and into position with piece of pipe of close diameter or similar

Eg. Pipe I use to re-seat on new forks is a piece of TV Aerial mast pole

To do it properly you'll need a start nut fitting tool, race fitting tool and a removal tool, tape measure, cutting guide and a hack saw with a metal cutting blade.
However, careful use of a flat bladed screwdriver and small hammer can be used to drive the crown race off the old fork steerer and then the reverse for the new steerer, making sure not to touch the smooth race surface. If the same stem is being used and you're not changing the spacers then you can simply measure the old steerer length (measure once, measure twice) and then cut the new on to the same length using the saw guide for a nice clean cut.
Fitting a start nut is fairly simple without the tool. Simply thread the bolt into the star nut and tap into the steerer, making sure you tap it in straight. It should be 5 mm or so below the top of the steerer. If you have a rubber mallet, you can use the stem top cap as a kind of guide.
Alternatively you can do away with a start nut and get a through bolt system, which runs a long bolt from the stem to the fork crown, clamping it all together.
