Post subject:  Project bikes

Did a quick search and couldn't find a similar thread, so apologies if there is one under a different guise :D

Who has a project bike in progress, or is looking to take on a project?

I currently have two ongoing.

First is a DMR Sidekick with Marzocchi DJ3s

Cost: £150 from Gumtree

Work done so far: Nothing

Work to be done: It came with Magura HS33 brakes, however they need some TLC, new pads, bleed etc.
It's got a Shimano Sora rear mech fitted as a tensioner (single speed), going to replace with DMR tensioner.
Tyres are well beyond useful life so will replace with DMR tyres.
Cranks and BB have seen better days so will replace with DMR parts too.
Also been offered to have it blasted and resprayed matte black for £50 so that will probably happen somewhere along the line.

Trying to keep the DMR theme throughout, and maybe go for a deep red on components to compliment the black matte if I get that done.

Second bike is a Cannondale BadBoy.

I've wanted one for years but have never found one that has really caught my eye for being different. Then this beauty turned up on Gumtree two weeks ago. Not sure which year it is, but came with Fatty Headshok fork, X9 rear mech, X7 front mech and shifters, Juicy Three brakes and DT Swiss wheels.

Cost: £450 (it is in almost immaculate condition)

Work done so far: New pads in the front.
Giant locking grips.

Work to be done: Brakes need a bleed.
Those horrendous Cannondale "Octopus" (or whatever they are called) pedals have to go. I really want to replace them with some Canfield Brothers Crampon pedals, but can't find any UK distributors :/
Carbon seat post.
Swop the short straight commuter bars for a wider carbon bar with a gentle rise.
It's currently a 3x9 but I may change it to a 2x10.
...I may get drunk one night and order a complete XT group set...

This bike is like my first daughter (I have no known children by the way). I want her to have the very best. I spend more time thinking about this bike than I do of all my other bikes, despite the fact I race my road bike weekly and ride it at least every other day for 40-50km each time, or my Giant Trance which cost over 5 times what the BadBoy cost!

The theme for the Cannondale is black by the way...everything will be black on this bike by design, manufacture or via a can of spray paint.

So who else has a money burner or two sat in their shed or under the stairs? :D

Yeah I'll post pictures when I get on the laptop.

I haven't bothered setting a budget, I know I will never stick to it :D

One other thing I forgot to put on the work to do for the Cannondale is a Headshok service...£149 and there are only two Cannondale approved centres in the UK. That's the price to pay for having a rare bit of kit I suppose :(

Snap!
I have only ever bought 1 bike off the shelf, all the others have been custom builds (i hate that saying) or more of a living project.

This is my main ride

Starting on No1's bike, she's loving it so far, but needs more bling.

I'm the same as Matt and Ian, bikes are a constant project.

The Lapierre is the second bike i have bought in one piece all the rest have been builds.

The badboy will be a very cool bike when finished such a good looking bike.

I've been riding it around at work today and I've had a few people ask about it (most saying "another one?!" :D ) but it does look cool. I just need a lottery win so I can buy everything I want for it at once and then lock myself away in the evenings to get it souped up :D

Bikes constantly evolve :)
I've ridden my enduro once so far it's got x9 shifters and a reverb stealth added. It needs carbon wheels and bars and possibly chainset :)

Thanks VW,

Yeah the first stage of wet and dry was a killer, well worth the effort though
