Hi all anyone got any recommendations for an external hard drive for a mac? don't like the 2 year life span the Apple Time Capsule seems to have. Any recommendations, views appreciated. Cheers. |

Can you just use any drive formatting correctly ?. Maplin always has a cheap selection of external 500GB/1TB drives..assuming they can be used. Andy |

Avoid the apple time capsule, absolute crap. had 2 before i changed to a 1tb wd 'my book' for mac - excellent piece of kit, easy to use etc and its fully compatible with time machine. |

Just bought a imac myself and have been wondering the same, was going to buy a WD Passport as have one on my windows laptop and been great. anyone know if its possible to have one external drive that works on both a mac and windows machine so can save and transfer without needing two separate external drives ? |

There are several add ins that let a mac read NTFS formatted drives, I think google actually support one of them. However you usually need to disable this if you want to reboot into boot camp. Any USB disc should be fine. I personally use an AirPort Extreme base station with a 2tb disc plugged into it, which means everything can access it and my macs will run time machine on it. |

Next question. Is it best to turn FileVault off when using time machine? |
