Does anybody use one of these? I need to get a bike rack for my car but am struggling to justify spending £180 on the dealer approved roof bars + £150 on a Thule bike carrier. I can get a tow bar for £240 fitted, which may be more useful in the future, so am leaning towards that. Anybody have any recommendations tow bar/ball bike racks? Cheers, Jon |

I opted for this type but that was so I could still have the tow-ball available to tow caravan with bikes mounted too.. http://www.maxxraxx.co.uk/home.html |

That looks like a good solution, thank you. Only fly in the ointment is that it's £233! That plus £240 tow bar = very expensive. Any cheaper options? |

Sounds like Damo has you sorted but for reference, and if anybody reads the thread with interest, I bought mine 2nd hand on ebay so reduces cost. |

£230!!!!!???? Go to uk tow bars- I got a tow bar ordered, twin socket electrics, caravan hitch and bumper protector for £120. So for a "standard" tow ball you should be looking at sub £100. local mechanic can fit it for £50! If you're near basildon, google Marks Mobile Mechanics in Wickford. |

Thanks guys. I know £230 is 'expensive' but remember that tow bar kits aren't universal. The place which is quoting £230 fitted a tow bar to my Astra for £140- electrics, relays- the lot. (I tow a trailer for a motorbike) My current car needs the bumper cut and a seperate subframe internally, hence it's more money. Keep the advice coming, especially any reccomendations for the rack brand/model! |

Just a quick question and forgive me if it's a silly one.... I don't suppose the bumper needs cutting to accomodate the standard flange / ball fitting? If so, would a swan-neck type work without cutting the bumper? Just a thought... |

No, i think you're right- the bumper does need cutting. But I don't think there's away around it, sadly. If anyone knows different my car is a 2009 Alfa Mito. Nice little car, but exceptionally small boot! |

The only further advice I can give you is to make sure its EC standard (supersedes BS), and do a web search for "fit towbar to alfa mito" or similar. |
