Wow..you are on a budget !.

A real decent DH bikes is going to be more in the thousands than hundreds I'm afraid.....but with careful second hand buying a decent one cant be built/obtained for less.

Pic is my finally finalised bike, a Commencal v1 Supreme DH frame and Marzochhi Forks (£500 from Pink Bike)...rest of the built was about another £700-£800...a few second bits..plus mostly saint gear which is a bit pricey.

Still there does seem to be plenty of kona bikes around (second hand) and its deff what Id look at if on a budget.

Youll prob find, like |i did, that you get bitten by the bug and start to fork out more and more..this is my 3rd decent bike build over the last three years....my first triup to Morzine/Les Gets (DH heaven in the alps) was a big eye opener for me.

Check this kona stinky out, prob the best you'd get with your money,
Could try haggle it down and upgrade the contact points with your remaining money I.e.
Grips
Pedals
Tyres

Never owned a Kona..but just noticed that there seems to be lots for sale 2nd hand at quite a cheap price so If i was very limited moneywise I'd be tempted to start there..but Id go for a frame and build it up with bits, perhaps from Ebay, if you are in no hurry to go ridiong in the winter its a good time to shop around.

I notice that CRC has got lots of Kona frames/bikes at cheapish prices.

Its also worth bearing in mind that you can buy a very beaten up frame and get it shot blasted/powder coated quite cheaply, Ive had a few done in Southend and you can also get hold of Forks/Shocks that need a rebuild a do it yourselfd if your mechanically minded.

Never ridden one....just read review of their very latest bike..cant recall the name, but it got rave reviews.

Certainly lots available, http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/Kona-stinky-f ... 4161547b35 for example..........which includes a shock which can be a bit pricey.

Its worth buying some bike mags my fave being Dirt to keep an eye on whats out there.;

I've got a Kona Colier its a good bike for the price, it's not as fast over the rooty or rock sections but its held it's own on DH tracks (Cwncarn Morzine, Aston Hill). Kona's have generally had a bad rep over the last few years and they are pretty mass market and the design of the stinky etc was quite stagnant so I think this is why they are cheap second hand but I would agree that they are a great starting point. Last year they released the operator DH or FR bike) which has been much better received so this might be why you are seeming lots of top riders on them at the moment.

If you've not done it before be carful when building one up from the frame as the cost seems to run away with you and ebay parts are not always the right size condition etc. I learnt a lot the first time I built up a frame from second hand parts off ebay about compatibility of all bike bits. But on the other hand if you can afford to make a few little mistakes it's all good stuff to learn and it's nice when you know you bike from the components up.

Check out pink bike, for send had frames / bikes, often good stuff there.
