Checked bike tonight & front brake lever hits bars it works but biting point well out ! the brake is avid elixor 5 does it need bleeding ?? & is it grief to bleed them ?? |

When you've sorted Geoff43 out I've a sponygy Avid Elixir 3 back brake you can get to work on Time to upgrade Geoff43... I see Shimano SLX or XT in your future... or Hope... or some Formula's...

Hi mate used to run them brakes had the same problem bleed out the brakes but when i turned the bike upside down the spongy feel returned  turned out to be a faulty diagram in the brake lever!As said bit of a pain to bleed out mate  p.s nick has a bleed kit!

How long you had them? I've spoken to loads of people that have had them replaced under warranty! I was going to speak to Evans about mine but need to bleed them first! |

Every set of avids I've had are bleed heavy.once you have a bleed kit it's quite easy I find and the more you do it the easier it gets  I like Hayes as over the years I have found them fit and forget. Easy tool free reach adjustment.

I got them on the yeti I bought 2nd hand at Xmas & these was on it I swapped them onto me hardtail so no idea on the history off them seen bleed kit on eBay for £10 if cant get on bleeding them ill get on to nick tks ! Put avid xo's on yeti ran these on hardtail for year no problemo |

There's a fairly good video on YouTube as well showing exactly how to do it (on phone so can't get link easy...). |

I seem to have a duff slx on the new bike, can't get the back to bleed up like the front. Very frustrating Geof have you checked your pads for wear? I'm on the damn phone.... |

Ive bleed my saints a few times using the method id use with a car, ie squeeze the lever, keeping the resevoir topped up and using a tube to collect the fluid from the caliper into a bowl, closing the bleed nipple after every lever squeeze BUT it then dawned on me that that was perhaps the wrong method, i then used a syringe at the caliper end to suck the fluid out, this is i believe how the bleed kits work, the syringe was from an old inkjet printer refill kit. This 2nd method produced better results as before i had had occasional problems. Andy |

Ive bled and fully rebuilt my avid cr's a few times now and weird as it sounds i actually got into pissing around with them even find it quite fun. They are deffinatly more of a faf than other brakes but when you find that sweet spot they cant be faulted. I started with this http://cdn.sram.com/cdn/farfuture/5WCqT ... _final.pdf the official avid manual and this is also a good video.. http://www.pinkbike.com/news/tech-tuesd ... -2010.html The bleed kits of ebay all work fine, but look for one with a wide brass screw nipple (the bit that goes in to the caliper body) as this will help you get a tight seal. Sorry to ramble on but itll make your life a lot easier. The first time i bled them i did it three time to get all the air out of the shitty factory bleed but one thats done it takes about 10 minutes once every 6 months. At the other end take out the pads from the capiler body and spray with gt85 pump the brake and then gently push back in to the body. If you go this a few times it helps to push some the brake dust away from the seals and loosen the pistons. youd be amazed how somthing so simple can make so much diffrence easpecially to that spongy feel. there yo go lecture over and good luck haha |
