 Post subject: Rear Airshock advice

What to look for and what to avoid with an Air shock for the rear, any advice ? I reckon my new ride will weigh less than my HT with an airshock on ?

I'd agree with that my yeti am sure is lighter than my cannondale ht & upgraded wheels to eastons ! Shock on yeti is rp23 fox defo recommend it

The frame came with a dhx 5.0 coil with air piggyback thingy it seems ok and i have no experience to compare it to anything else but as its second hand and a bonus with the frame its the first thing i'll replace, unless something breaks so i'm on the look out, rather than spend £90 on a Ti coil for it i reckon replace the whole unit....plus i've not bought anything for a while (apart from Shimano mineral oil)

will take a look at rp23's for a starter cheers Geoff43

The beauty of an Airshock is that if Mojo service it for you they will custom valve it for your weight. After the service it is dialled :)
Happy hunting having a HT only now I have little current knowledge

RP23 is great for peadly stuff, but if this is more a big hitting bike and not XC from what i've read you should stick to a coil?

I use a float RP2 for gravity enduro and light freeride/DH and it works fine. Great adjustability and the shock eats up the impacts as well as pedals fine. If you want to save some money you could look at getting an RP2 instead of the RP23, because from my experience the shock pedals fine when fully open; so there is no need for the trail setting. Plus the RP2 has pro-pedal so you can stiffen it up it you want to.

good stuff....

Its on an 08 bottlerocket and it needs to be able to handle jumps and drops of all sorts but also dragging my chubby arse around the local XC stuff up some quite testng hills.

The dhx.5 on it at the moment means there is no pedal bob, even when i'm really struggling up silly hills, same cant be said for the lyrik's on the front LOL but i am yet to land heavy or drop off anything higher than 3ft so no idea how the bottom out boost thing will work, an air version of what i have makes sense also Geoff's rp23 seemed to work great on his Yeti Last night....

So if there is no pedal bob and it will handle big drops why are you wanting to change it?

surely 200g won't make a blind bit of difference to how fast you can ride up hill ?

a 1 x 10 set up would probably save more weight and make it less likely to fail.

lyric prob needs a heavier weight spring installed

Dunno, just that the shock is old and of unknown origin and abuse and confusing as hell to set up ! thought an air shock would be lighter and easier....

That sounds like laziness, take it to nick, get it serviced and then spend a tiny amount of time setting everything to the middle setting and test riding it
