Thanks for the tips guys. I took a spill out on a Great Wakering trail yesterday afternoon... Although I don't have my cleats on yet, I imagine it could of been a lot worse if I was clipped in... especially considering I am not used to unclipping... Haha. It involved me and my bike roling down a 12ft embankment, nearly ending up in a boggy marsh... Good fun! |

People that dont like em haven't mastered them. people that do have! i love them! and trust me i know all about falling off! unclipping becomes second nature. Crank bros or Time are the best as there is no setting up as the both work on a spring system. If you want the best of both worlds go for a Crank Bro mallet 1 clipless and a shoe like the Fiveten minnaar spd or hellcat. |

I think the fact that you can loosen off the clips on Shimano SPDs make them good to getting to grips with clueless riding, but if you want to upgrade then get some mallets! |

Not so much the newer trail pedals though. The large platform leaves lots of gaps for mud shedding. It's the cleats I get problems with on clay type mud but that's more because of the shoe. |

Make sure you get them set up right for you, Id been riding with the left cleat set too far inwards to avoid a pain i was getting on the ball of my foot, as a result i was getting a nasty pain in my left knee which i was blaming on an incident id had earlier in the year where i fell badly on a snowboard and my knee popped out of joint momentarily. Anyway a few weeks ago I had a read up on setting cleats up ect and repositioned the cleat, now i have no more knee pain and im putting more power down. |

Bear in mind that Mallets don't play nicely with all shoes, some trimming may be needed, but out of all the crank bros pedal they are the ones I would go with. A lot of reviews criticise the durability of their other pedals and I know some who have tried them do too, but then that seems true for a lot of the crank bros stuff. |

Yeah I agree I wouldn't use a hard soled cross country shoe with a mallet. |

I use shimano am45 with my mallets really good for my dodgy knee. I get no pain at all. |

I had my first clipless trail ride on Saturday morning with a few guys from this forum and I think it was fairly successful! It was nice to not have to worry about my feet slipping off of the pedals at all. Now to get used to unclipping... Lol. I have set my cleats up slightly inwards as I've noticed that I pedal with my feet at a dodgy angle... I always take Allen Keys on my rides so I can always re-position them when I'm out if needed! No no, I definitely did... Andydd and Geoff can verify that! Forgot to unclip a few times coming to a stop and ended up in a crumpled heap... all good fun! The one thing that I am a little nervous of is hitting fast / technical sections whilst clipped in, I assume this will come with confidence and time... |
