I dont know the answer to this but i'm eager to order all my bits and bobs to get on with the new build so the question is:

Got some Stans ZTR FLow rims to go tubeless, i thought i'd just have to shove a valve in them and fill with goo and air, but i have looked at the tubeless kits and wonder do i actually need a rim strip with a valve connected instead ?? :wtf:

You need the sticky rim strip (without this the 'goo' will go inside the rim), valve and (optionally, but advised) sealant plus a way to inflate the tyre rapidly.

This may help. from what i can work out its the stretching as you install that makes the difference and the correct rim prep. plus i would do it in a warm environment so the tape is not brittle. i use tapes at work for different things and we keep them warm before using.

Looks like i'm about to bail on this, bought a track pump yesterday in desperation as i couldn't wait till friday to get to the workshop and spent about an hour trying this malarkey last night, the rims are stans flow from superstar and the tires are my current High rollers so i was expecting some issues are they are not UST the rims have the superstar rim strips, turns out i think these are arse as i dont think they'll help sealing the rim as they're not particularly tight or well aligned ? after two failed attempts i cut this off and used the yellow rim tape although i only went around once, have since read that twice might help.

with the tire on to be fair its a pretty loose fit once popped over the rim and therefore far from airtight... had a look on the stans website after i gave in last night and that had a much more detailed how-to using soapy water and multiple wraps of tape so i may give that a go but i think i'll buy a couple of tubes at lunchtime today....

With non tubeless tyres, getting them to seat is harder work, especially with a track pump, but it can be done.
My tip would be put a tube in, get them seated, let the air out again, if they pop off the seat, you've got no chance, if you have to push them off the seat then only do one side. put a valve in, put the it back on the rim, soap up the tyre, lay it face up horrizontal, and then go hell for leather on the track pump. It helps if you can pull it part of the way on already.

Like i said before. Happy to help the first time.

Tubes are so cheap and punctures so infrequent i don't know why you are giving yourself a headache over a few grams tbh

The side that hasnt been seated. i use a bucket to sit them on.

Have you put propper tape on now? the rim stips that come with new wheels is for use with tubes, not tubeless.

Andy,
Its not about weigh saving, its about how the tyres roll and react.
ask yourself, other than push bikes, what other vehicles use tubes?
