Always run 1.8s or 2.0's but recently added a 2,35 high roller on the back but with the trails being dry not sure what difference its made if any.

Are wide tyres for downhill/freeride? are narrow ones for xc? does it matter?

That is generally the rule as the wider tyres normally have a more square profile. I think its also weight related as rolling resistance on the wheels is what makes pedalling harder and on a DH bike its not really an issue.

I run 2.25 on my 4x bike, 2.0 on the XC and 2.4 on the DJ although they are holy rolers so just wide and smooth....

Fat ones give more grip and are more stable in the corners as the contact patch is bigger in both instances. More rolling resistance is your trade off.

Or cut it up and make a cheap frame protector if you feel the need but would never ride on them.
