Always run 1.8s or 2.0's but recently added a 2,35 high roller on the back but with the trails being dry not sure what difference its made if any. Are wide tyres for downhill/freeride? are narrow ones for xc? does it matter? |

That is generally the rule as the wider tyres normally have a more square profile. I think its also weight related as rolling resistance on the wheels is what makes pedalling harder and on a DH bike its not really an issue. I run 2.25 on my 4x bike, 2.0 on the XC and 2.4 on the DJ although they are holy rolers so just wide and smooth.... |

Fat ones give more grip and are more stable in the corners as the contact patch is bigger in both instances. More rolling resistance is your trade off. |

Or cut it up and make a cheap frame protector if you feel the need but would never ride on them. |
