They are shimano pedals I have a set on my road bike.
If you look closely there are markings on the metal part of the pedals in the centre.
There are Allen key adjusters for tension I would wind them off If you are not used to clipped in pedals.
I use some shoes I got from lidl they have been great.

I've entered the clipless world with a pair of shimano xc30. Snug fit and ventilation is OK.

I looked for a pair of these in the Chelmsford shop, but no luck... Think your only get these via mail order.. So I picked up a pair of karrimore waterproof shoes instead...

David, you are probably right the shimano ones i mentioned might not be light enough for xc , in the winter i reckon they would be ok.
im more than happy with mine so will be using them for the riding i do :-)

Went to to the local bike shop today and got myself some flr f-65 shoes with shimano cleats were about 80 quid all in dont seem to bad for a starter shoe . Yet to try them on the bike yet though :)
