Post subject:  Summer Tyre for XC fire roads, tarmac etc?

At the moment I'm running High Rollers 40a 2.35 supertacky front and 60a 2.35 rear. I rode 36 miles yesterday and it was painful. I need recommendations for tyres suited to tarmac, fire roads dry dusty conditions? So far the Maxxis Ardents have caught my eye but don't know if the grip trade off will make it worth it. Opinions needed.

Thanks

Chris

Ardents are awesome, also look at race kings and MK2's for a little more grip but still roll well.

Not a specific recommendation, but I look for the highest tpi count folding tyre and like Conti's black chilli compound for grip and wear resistance. Pricey but last for miles longer. Run high pressure on dusty fire roads which means narrower than 2.35. So maybe Speedking, RaceKing or X-King folding 180TPI at 2.0.

I'm currently using Maxxis Aspens, they roll fast and I haven't lost any traction while using them, the only downside is thorns seem to go through them real easy.

Currently I have;

Maxis IKON for the front - super sticky tyre for dryer/dusty trails and by far the fastest - useless with event the slightest bit of mud - and show the damn tyre a thorn and you've a puncture.

Maxis ASPEN on the back - decent tyre actually - holds it's on in the dry and the wet AND it doesn't get clogged with mud.

But as others have said CONTI have some awesome tyres for summer/all year: http://www.conti-tyres.co.uk/conticycle/mtb.shtml just keep in the XC / Trail section...

Race Kings are cool and fast, X-King remind me a great deal of the Maxis ASPENS & Mountain Kings are borderline for me if you want a faster tyre but are the muts nuts.

Thanks for the feedfback guys. I'm not that fond of Conti tyres after having a pair of mountain kings puncture about 8 times in 2 months. Quite a few people have mentioned that the Black Chilli compound is a lot better though.

To help prevent punctures (on conti tyres) you would need the Protection version of your chosen tyre, which have Black Chilli compound but this has no bearing on puncture resistance.I have been running Panaracer flataway tyre liners and have only had one puncture in the last 6 months.

I know a lot of people hate it but I run slime in my tubes with conti tyres

I have had a variety of wheels, some needed tape, some didnt.
Current Carbon AM wheels just need a once over with stans tape.
once up, a scoop full of sealant, no more punctures, better tyre feel, faster rolling. simples.

Thanks for everyone's feedback. Tyres now ordered. If the rims allowed tubeless i might have tried that out. Fingers crossed they roll faster as the High rollers are killing me haha
