So the mini bug has out grown his ridgeback and it's time for a proper bike :)

Just about to pick up a XS Inbred plus wheels and other bits from a friend so that just leaves drive train and brakes.

Going for 1 by 10 to keep it simple.

Also going for a rigid carbon fork.


Cost saving on the frame and forks leaves a decent budget for the rest

I did pick a medium cage but wondered if it would work with the one up 42T ?

Just noticed the crank takes an 83mm BB which won't fit :(

Looks like the double 170mm slx crank with that on one chain ring and a bash guard will do the job :thumbup:

I'm running 42T one up ring with a mediem cage and its fine on the stache, on the 40T you can run a short cage but i would still go mediem for less tension

In good nick... serviced it a couple of months ago, new BB and brake blocks, dismantled and lubed the forks, headset and cables etc.

Couple of scuffs here and there but nothing major ( which is surprising ) ;)

Could do with a new front mech... I given up trying to adjust it to get all three gears :lolno:

I built one for my son earlier in the year - got a great deal on a Kona frame so spent some pennies on the rest.

I was going to go XT and the 1 x 10 setup with a narrow/wide but in the end went with a deore crankset and put the raceface n/w on as you have said, and then went for the trail set-up Zee.

I got some dual air rockshox at a decent price, some dtswiss rims & hubs.

Anyway, drive train never skips a beat and looks way cool.

Got any pics Stumpie... all inspiration gratefully received :)

Looks like my mate might have a raceface crank up for grabs too so that might be sorted.

I can and do live with Avids :eh: .... don't know if I could live with them on someone else's bike that I have to fix ( even if he is my son ) if you see what I mean. Part of the attraction of the XT's is fit and forget... change pads every now and then.

Matt... if I go 2 by 10 instead of the one up will the medium mech still be ok?

I cant stand avids :oops: ..lol

Thats the reason i got Xt's with ice tech rotors ,fit and forget..!!

I'm running 2x10 with XT medium cage, if that helps.

The OneUp 42T sprocket is compatible with most medium or long cage 10 speed mountain rear derailleurs. We are working to populate a complete list of preferred models. As with any cassette you need to check that your rear derailleur has enough capacity.

Rear derailleur capacity = (largest rear cog – smallest rear cog) + (largest front chainring – smallest front chain ring)



Here are two examples:

1. For someone running a 1X system with a 32T front chainring and an 11-42T rear cassette:

(42-11)+(32-32)=31T capacity


2. For someone running a 2X system with 40/28 front chainrings and an 11-42T rear cassette:

(42-11)+(40-28)=43T capacity


Medium cage deraileurs can typically handle 37T (Shimano) 39T (SRAM) and long cage rear derailleurs can handle 43T (Shimano) 45T (SRAM)."

Think a long will be better but it depends on the size difference between the two rings on the crank
