One of the guys from work wants to buy a leaving pressent for another worker and has asked me for some advice. After talking about getting a go pro for him i decided that he would not use it enough so have surggested a garmin/tracker. The main reason for this would be so he could upload a route that i or others have done to get out and ride some new places (he works shifts and has young kids so the normal evening/weekend ride as impossible). What Garmin is best?

If not a garmin what other good presents would you surgest? Thought about a proper tool kit as well

Tool kit is good if he can use it?

Garmin 500 upwards (i think) allow you to add other peoples courses to follow, 800 i think is the first one with maps to follow.

Having used both types to follow routes i wouldnt suggest anything that doesnt have maps, more for when you get lost or need a way marker in the middle of nowhere.

Go-Pro's are great fun (to me) other people watching the video's maybe not so much ;)

Well, he was able to do a bike build over the winter months (with a bit of help from me at times) so a proper tool kit is not a bad idea.

How well is the screen design to show the route for off roading?

Good for big / longer stuff, harder for short tighter stuff like Epping

If the intention is just to follow routes and not really performace the Garmin Touring is an option. Performance + maps + connectivity then 810 in average £100 more but well worth it. For off road there is the 810 Enduro pack loaded with OS map.

Have a look at this article they explain every single garmin model:
