I havnt a clue, all I want to is download route files. Upload and ride on pre loaded maps as I'll be riding in area with no phone signal.

Is there an iPhone app for this?

You can use a phone app but the battery will run down quickly and the offline maps can be expensive.

I use Viewranger on my phone... you can download OS maps as you need them and it works offline so doesn't need a phone signal.

But tbh I just use it as a back up as I'd rather leave the phone battery for when I need to make a phone call ;)

After trying to use the Garmin 500 etc and getting lost because it loses gps signal under tree, bread crumb trails are hopeless etc I decided to get something better mainly because I started riding with my family and a 10 mile detour would be frowned upon.

Looked at the cycling ones but various online reviews and threads about them being a bit lacking on occasions I decided to forget the cycling part and just buy a good gps nav,

I went for one of these https://buy.garmin.com/en-US/US/into-sports/hiking/oregon-650/prod113520.html

It's a big ugly brick that's hard to mount on the bike ( managed it though :) )

But....

It's 'rugged' and waterproof to IPX7 ( you can drop it in a stream ). It uses AA batteries so carry some spares and just change them if you need to.... mine last about 4 - 5 hrs with the screen on or ages with the screen set to auto off.

Most important thing though... uses both the American and Russian gps satellites and will get a signal lock while I'm sitting in my office with no windows through a internal ceiling and my industrial units roof..... a good enough lock for it to track me walking around inside ;)

You can load OS maps but I use open cycle maps.

TLDR....

Bad... expensive, ugly not really for bikes.

Good... proper not messing about gps that works when you need it to.

I'd just keep an eye out for a Garmin 810?

I've tried in the past on my own and in groups to follow a off-road gpx and it's always pants.

Don't get me wrong though if you are a roadie and following a road gpx then it's all good but trails twist & turn way too much to follow really.

I guess unless you are using it over a period of time to learn a new area?

I'll keep an eye out for their 810,

The idea is I spend a lot of time moving around the UK. What I would like to do is be able to stop off at random location with pre loaded route files from MBR and go for a ride with half a chance of hooking some trails up. 2016 I will spending a lot of time on the south coast for the South Downs is one target area.

All I'd say Matt is it's a great idea but unless you have steer-by-wire on your bike or an iPad strapped to the bars it's next to impossible to follow a gpx off-road.

Then the 810 is ideal and will navigate you to the start like a sat nav

Like it did when we were at Epping... a place fairly flat and we knew roughly where we were going..?

How much of that was wooded?

I used an app give me spoken turn for turn on my phone, jus had copy gpx filmed to phone. This was from South Woodham Ferrers station to Danbury mostly road and fields.

I'LL have lookup app name.
