Trying to get motivated to ride Epping more In the wet muddy winter conditions.I definetly want a second bike and quite fancy a fat bike but only if it's a useful tool and not a fad. Any input welcome.

Thanks Matt. Yeah my main concern was weight.I was very close to buying a new on one fatty currently on eBay but the reviews are saying nearly 16kg! I may go look at the calibre one at go outdoors aparently around 14kg but brakes would need upgrading.Ive seen what I want, the cannondale with the lefty but I don't think 2500 on a winter bike will fly with the Mrs;)

I loved mine, great fun but you've got to be committed. My advice would be to buy a cheap one and see if you enjoy it.
Great for Epping mud, and great for stamina building.

Good advice but after looking at reviews and specs I really like the caad1 so if the chance comes to demo I will. Then maybe get by for now and hope they have a sale on them at some point;)

A 29er short travel or hardtail is a great weapon for the winter months in Epping. Cuts through the mud and allows the bike to flow.

I can confirm this, I rode my 29er with some fat bikes last year, can't say that there was any real advantage to the fat bikes, looked like much more hard work if you ask me  In the deeper mud fat tyres seem to slide about more on top of the mud.

The spes fat bike that I mentioned in my review is still for sale in the shop for £1000, if it fits it could be a cheapish purchase....
