What's the full model number of the shifter, should start with SL- ?

Ah yeah it looks like there is no separate part for that shifter according to the Shimano tech doc.
That's a bit crap as a lot of their other shifter do have the top and clamp as a aftermarket replacement part.
I think I have a 9spd rh XT shifter lying around but I bet the clamp from that wouldn't fit!

You're best off just buying a used one on eBay for that part tbh.

What you want isn't listed there... so as you say it's probably easier to replace the complete unit - or ask if anybody here as an old one knocking about - I have loads of old SRAM bits but no Shimano :(

I've checked my 9spd one and there no way you'd bodge that onto your shifter. The clamp is integrated into the lower half of the shifter, not the top like on yours. Looks like XT will be the way to go.
