Hey guys,

so today I decided to take a shortcut through a field footpath as I thought the ground would be solid, and it was at the start, but half way through, it got really muddy and my bike got caped in mud, I left my bike parked outside for a few hours whilst working in library; when I came out, I tried to ride, but the mud has frooze around and in the derailleur.

I should know better, but I had to leave it, and go and do some work.

Need solutions, ?

Warm water to remove crud then oil and lube up...

Don't force any stuck parts as that could damage even more...

Roger that, I did think too; kettle up, let chill to warm. But do you reckon it will be ok to apply warm water to frozen derailleur? I'm pretty sure it's just the derailleur that's the problem, everything else seems to be moving ok.

Cool, think I might just go out there now and give it ago, and if my air blower is working, I can use that to dry it.

Did the same this morning. Got home later yesterday as I did a minor diversion to get a couple more miles in. Was slushy though. Went to ride to work this morning and had to defrost the chain and front mech first (couldn't clean the bike last night as it was about 7.30pm when I got home). All part of the fun though!

Hi,
I take my bike and leave it in the works kitchen. (Over night)
My solution is to relieve yourselve (Drink lots before ) It is a quick fix and should be well washed before you take to your bed room.
Flask of hot water on trips out (at least you can have a cupper if not needed.)
Clean it before you leave it.
I am sure there are lots more suggestions.
Have fun
Bob

Ah pissing on your bike, the emergency solution! I can't take my bike in to work, it has to stay outside (sheltered) as it gets fairly dirty along the Flitch at the moment. Lube with anti-freeze would be handy but may not do the paintwork any good! All I did was spray on some Muc Off bike lube, which contains alcohol, seemed to thaw things out a bit.

I tried to cool my rotors down once using that method.. worked for a short while but had the unpleasant side effect of pee steam which is apparently unpleasant for your riding buddies! :wtf:

Cold water out of a tap is often 15+ degrees warmer than ice and will melt it as well

I just cleaned and re-oiled my bike on Thursday, before the snow fell, I think the chain just frooze too, as a couple of links I felt were stiff.

Next time I'll be brave and find a kettle!

Glad I did some work on it on Thursday, worked brilliantly today; when I got home I used an air blower to get the snow off.

My seat snapped yesterday (one of the rails, SDG normal one) pretty dissapointing but assume it was covered in snow and ice and failed... hardtail too. Worse things happen at sea
